Until the 19th century, large amethyst deposits were unknown. The stone commanded prices equal to ruby and sapphire. Siberian amethysts were the most prized of all.

Natural citrine is extraordinarily rare. Most on the market is heat-treated amethyst — a transformation that mirrors its alchemical lore as a stone of abundance.
